SOCIAL SCIENCE NAVARRE

ORGANISATION
    • The five merindades:

The Chartered Community of Navarre (Comunidad Foral de Navarra) is an autonomous community in northern Spain, bordering the Basque Autonomous Community, La Rioja, and Aragon in Spain and Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France.

Navarre has a Parliament elected every four years, determines the president of the Community.

RIVERS

A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In Navarre there are four main rivers: Ebro, Ega, Arga and Aragón.
CLIMATES

MOUNTAIN CLIMATE

Located in the Pyrenean valleys. General characteristics:
 - Precipitation: Very abundant. More than 1000mm per year.
 - Temperatures: Fresh summers. Cold winters.
 -Thermal amplitude: Less than 10 degrees annually.
 -The predominant vegetation is pines and firs.

OCEANIC CLIMATE

Located in the Northwest and pre-Pyrenees. General characteristics:
 - Precipitation: Very abundant. More than 800mm per year.
 -Temperatures: Fresh summers. Soft winters. 
 -Thermal amplitude: less than 12 degrees annually.
 - In the natural landscape dominates the beech, oak, ash and chestnut

TRANSITIONAL CLIMATE

Located in the Middle zone of Navarra.General characteristics:
 - Precipitation: Irregular. Between 900mm and 700mm a year.
 - Temperatures: Fresh summers. Soft winters.
 -Thermal amplitude: Greater than 15 degrees annually.
 -The dominant vegetation is oak, pine and oak

MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE

Located in the Ebro Valley area. General characteristics:
 - Precipitation: Very irregular. 400mm a year.
 - Temperatures: Hot summers. Cold winters.
 -Thermal amplitude: Greater than 18 degrees annually.
 -The landscape consists mainly of crops. The vegetation corresponds to holm oak, thyme, rosemary and pine trees.

THE RELIEF OF NAVARRE

The mountain area
  • Macizos Antiguos in the north.
  • Montes vascos in the west. The mountain range of Urbasa, Aralar and Andia and the valley of Arakil can be found here. 
  • The Pyrenees in the east of Navarre.The highest peak, la Mesa de los Tres Reyes. In the pyrenees there are deep valleys that rivers have opened among different mountains such as Roncal, Salazar, Aezkoa, Erro or Baztan.
The middle area
It is the transitional zone between The mountain and the Ribera areas. The river basins of Aoiz-Lumbier and Pamplona and the mountain ranges of Illon, Leire, Izco and El Perdón are present here.
The Ribera
It is in southern Navarre. It is a plain made up of low fertile lands that belong to Ebro’s depression.
